1. Ada’s enemies in the novel include Ruth and Lady Thornton. Ada believes Ruth is her enemy because she is German. She digs through her backpack to discover if she is a spy. Ruth and Ada bond over their shared love of horses and eventually, they claim each other as sisters. Lady Thornton is Ada’s enemy because she perceives her as brisk and unhelpful. Lady Thornton proves to be capable, however, when Susan becomes ill, and Lady Thornton aids her in getting professional help. Ada soon learns to respect Lady Thornton. (Various chapters)

2. Ada believes she is responsible for Jamie because Mam expected her to be responsible in the past and because she mistrusts others who care for her. When Jamie and Susan are injured at different times in the novel, Ada feels it is her responsibility to care for them.
