A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.

Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Identify and discuss the various biases, stereotypes, and attitudes toward class systems in the novel. Consider these specific points in your discussion:

  • How are the characters from various classes presented in the novel?
  • What are some differences between the French and the British citizens?
  • How are the lower classes portrayed in France?
  • How are the lower classes portrayed in Britain?
  • What differences in societal norms are there between the French and British characters?
  • How does the novel reflect the biases of the period when it was written and those of its author?

Teaching Suggestion: Another topic you may want to consider is the way in which Jewish characters are portrayed in the novel. It will be helpful for students to have access to the novel and their answers to the Reading Questions for reference. Because the discussion questions cover a variety of topics over the course of the novel, students may want to begin by brainstorming notes before responding. Specific questions might instead be assigned to small groups for brief discussion; then representative speakers might share with the larger group their group’s conclusions. An independent written response might then follow up the brainstorming or group activity.
