Ty leaves Gemma alone for a time, exploring Seablite. He stumbles into the infirmary and panics as he recalls being experimented on.
Ty hears a whale coming their direction and swims to get Gemma, who was frightened by the whale’s singing and by the glowing fish in the building. Ty explains that whales are curious, so if they go outside with their headlamps on, it may come to them. Ty only gives one call to encourage it. He prepares a lasso-type cord and when the whale passes over them, he hitches it to the whale and he and Gemma fly out behind it, pulled along in its wake, both enjoying the moment.
Ty and Gemma stay hooked to the whale all the way to the Peaveys’ home, where the rest of the pioneer families are bringing fish livestock and food to help the family rebuild.
Inside, Jibby asks Gemma to live with him, which Ty clarifies is a proposal of marriage. Gemma refuses, although Ty is shocked to see she is intrigued by the offer to stay in Jibby’s empty home, since she has never had so much space.
Ty finds Doc to confront him, but Doc is with others and Ty knows the conversation needs to be private.
