Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“EPILOGUE”

In this activity, students compose an epilogue to describe Landon’s life after his marriage to Jamie.

Using details from the text, write an epilogue to describe what happens to Jamie and Landon after their marriage or Landon’s life after Jamie’s death. Use the questions below to guide your composition and draw conclusions about unanswered questions in the novel.

  • What happened to Jamie after her marriage to Landon?
  • What is the miracle Landon refers to at the end of the novel?
  • What occupation did Landon choose?
  • How does Landon celebrate Jamie’s memory?
  • What does Landon do with his family fortune?
  • Does Landon remain involved in charitable work?
  • What is Landon’s role in Hegbert’s church?

Share a brief summary of your epilogue with your peers; select and read aloud a brief passage.

Teaching Suggestion: Students might benefit from helping to design the details of this activity; for example, they might work together to refine page or word ranges, writing interim process deadlines and guidelines for “publishing,” sharing, and peer critiquing. Reviewing short story elements (point of view, setting, theme, etc.) might also be beneficial, as an epilogue includes some aspects of a short work.
